| CUBAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL PLANNING: Regional and Urban Planning Convention |
|
Date: October 30 - November 2, 2007 Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Location: Havana, Cuba |
Today’s Cuba is an urban society. Fully 76 percent of Cubans live in cities and the trend is toward greater urbanization. The 1990s was a decade of economic crisis for the country that adversely affected the quality of urban life, eroding urban infrastructure, intensifying the housing deficit, and putting significant strain on key urban services such as transportation, water and waste management, culture, parks and recreation, and particularly housing.
But in the past several years, Cuba has been experiencing an impressive economic recovery. With this recovery has come a growing interest in cities and their regions as a platform for the nation’s development.
What are the problems and prospects for cities and city life in 21st century Cuba? How can appropriate and resource-efficient technologies be directed toward improvements to the public realm and into paths that are restorative of cities and their cultural souls, ecological systems and rural hinterlands? How can civic engagement, diverse urban mobility options and well-planned public spaces contribute to the ongoing promotion of sustainability and equity as underpinnings of Cuba’s approach to human development? How can the country’s planning system be strengthened to improve disaster preparedness?
You are invited to join planners and urban specialists from across Cuba and around the world in a discussion of these and other issues and to contribute to ongoing efforts to revamp planning concepts and search for new sustainable development tools. The Regional and Urban Planning Convention – the biennial conference of the Cuban Institute of Physical Planning – will be held from October 30th to November 2nd in Havana.
Please note the language of the conference is Spanish. |
