What are the new drivers of job creation? To help answer this question and avoid economic and social polarization in communities affected by the demise of traditional manufacturing, municipalities are developing wealth creation strategies designed to benefit all sectors of the economy. Toronto’s recently adopted “Prosperity Agenda” is a response to a problem being faced by decision-makers in city regions all over North America. The focus of municipal efforts to preserve “employment lands” in the face of demand from commercial and residential developers brings such issues into sharp focus. What does the future hold for large brownfield sites like the recently closed Kodak plant in the heart of Toronto? What can be done to help communities adapt when jobs disappear? Where in the Toronto region are jobs being created, and what kind of jobs are they? Do we have the right tools to plan a successful economic future? Join us in the search for answers that go well beyond Toronto’s borders.
