Mobility Without Borders: An International Symposium on Transportation Innovation
 Around the world, communities are changing the way they think about transportation. As Metrolinx develops a Regional Transportation Plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area -- a plan that will transform both our transportation system and the way people use it -- experience from other jurisdictions is an important resource. On Monday, June 23, experts from several countries that have implemented successful transportation initiatives gathered to share their insights and ideas at an International Symposium. Transportation innovators from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium told us about the challenges they faced, their successes, and how we can apply this knowledge to meet our own transportation vision. Guest speakers and panellists included:
· Professor George Hazel, a key advisor to the UK and Australian governments, who led the introduction of transit priority measures in Edinburgh, Scotland and pioneered car-free developments and car-sharing initiatives in the U.K.;
· Dr. Pierre Laconte, Honourary Secretary General of the worldwide network of public transport professionals at UITP (International Association of Public Transport) based in Brussels, and an expert on transport and urban planning;
· Michael Glotz-Richter, Senior Project Manager of Sustainable Mobility for the City of Bremen, Germany , and international leader in mobility hub development;
· Sue Flack, Head of Sustainable Transport for Northamptonshire County Council in England , and an acknowledged leader in the sustainable management of urban growth, and land-use and transit planning;
· Dr. Steven Cassidy, Regional Director for Europe of MRC McLean Hazel, a leading innovator of transportation-oriented information technology and communications. View symposium presentation – slides 40 and 41 provided courtesy of Siemes.
