In April 2001, the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) began implementation
of the International Partnership Program for Good Urban Governance (IPPGUG).
The program is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA) through the Membership and Specialized Organizations Program (MSOP)
of the Canadian Partnership Branch (CPB). This five-year (2001-2006) program
seeks to assist developing countries achieve more efficient and equitable
delivery of local government services (economic, environmental and social)
through the promotion of good governance practices. The program has two
purposes:
- To assist partners to develop model projects that demonstrate
enhanced capacity of local authorities to formulate and implement development
strategies that address basic human needs, economic development, environmental
protection and gender equality.
- To develop and strengthen global and
regional networks to collect and disseminate new knowledge on good
governance, economic development, environmental protection, delivery
of social services and gender equality at the local level.
Currently CUI is undertaking projects and initiatives in the Philippines,
Cuba and Indonesia and soon will be beginning activities in Ethiopia and
Jamaica.
