Canadian Urban Institute

The Canadian Urban Institute has been active in Central Europe since the early 1990s. The CUI manages multi-year, partnership-oriented projects designed to help our partner countries deal with the challenges inherent in the transition to democratic governance structures and market-based economies.

Funded by a variety of sources, including the Canadian International Development Agency, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (through the former Task Force on Central and Eastern Europe), the World Bank and the Fiscal Decentralization Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe, these technical cooperation projects have focussed on supporting smooth transitions to decentralized government systems by providing capacity building for both national and local governments. CUI provides support in areas such as strategic planning, economic development, environmental management, land use planning, improving the management and organizational capabilities of local governments, strengthening local government associations, establishing improved frameworks for fiscal decentralization and project planning, financing and management.
